Hazardous Waste Management Facility Planning

The treatment of oily waste and sludge is a complex task that requires precise coordination of mechanical and sustainable thermal processes. At econ industries, we not only supply the VacuDry® system, but also plan and integrate the surrounding process steps – such as waste handling, classification, and dewatering – to ensure a complete and efficient plant design.

Our upstream solution starts with reception, classification, mechanical dewatering, typically using a high-performance centrifuge or other suitable separation technologies. Effective dewatering removes free water and oil, significantly reducing the treatment volume of the VacuDry® plant. This step not only lowers the energy demand in the following thermal process but also increases the total capacity of the facility.

Process steps in a typical econ industries plant:
  1. Reception of oily sludge
    Trucks or pipelines unload into feed tanks, buffer containers or pits.
  2. Centrifuge dewatering
    Solids and water are separated to reduce moisture content before thermal processing.
  3. VacuDry® – vacuum thermal desorption process
    At 50 mbar(abs) and moderate temperatures up to 400 °C, hydrocarbons are evaporated and later condensed in the highest quality.
  4. Oil and water recovery
    Valuable oils and clean water are separated and can be reused.
  5. Safe handling of solids
    Clean, dry mineral residues are discharged – free from hydrocarbons with a TPH content of below 0.5 %.
  6. Optional modules
    Wastewater treatment, Mercury stabilization by MMCU, or other packaging units can be integrated depending on project needs.

Thanks to the synergy of centrifugal dewatering and VacuDry® vacuum-based thermal separation, our concept approaches offer a robust and sustainable solution for refinery sludge, tank bottom sludge, drill cuttings and more.
