Leading the Way in Mercury Waste Management

econ industries is a global leader in hazardous waste treatment technologies, committed to delivering innovative and sustainable solutions. The MMCU exemplifies our dedication to environmental protection and operational excellence, providing industries with a safe, efficient, and reliable method for mercury stabilization.

The Mobile Mercury Conversion Unit (MMCU) is an innovative and reliable solution for the safe stabilization of elemental mercury (Hg⁰), transforming this hazardous substance into mercury sulphide (HgS), a stable and insoluble compound suitable for safe final disposal. Designed to meet the strict requirements of international regulations, including the Minamata Convention on Mercury, the MMCU provides an on-site, traceable, and cost-effective solution for industries dealing with mercury-contaminated waste.

The Need for Safe Mercury Stabilization

With the global ban on mercury trade and export under the Minamata Convention, companies face increasing pressure to responsibly manage their surplus of mercury. Transporting mercury to centralized waste facilities is often impractical due to the high costs, stringent legal requirements, and significant environmental and safety risks involved. This has created a demand for mobile, on-site solutions that ensure secure, traceable, and environmentally responsible disposal.

The Solution: Mobile Mercury Conversion Unit

econ industries addresses this need with its Mobile Mercury Conversion Unit (MMCU) – a state-of-the-art, mobile processing plant engineered to convert elemental mercury into mercury sulphide (HgS), also known as cinnabar. This transformation renders the mercury chemically stable, non-volatile, and insoluble, significantly reducing environmental risks and ensuring compliance with international disposal standards.

Why Choose MMCU?

The Mobile Mercury Conversion Unit from econ industries stands out as the most advanced and flexible solution for mercury stabilization worldwide. It empowers industries to take proactive control over their mercury waste management, ensuring safe and permanent disposal without compromising environmental safety or corporate responsibility.

By choosing the MMCU, companies can achieve:

  • Safe and compliant disposal of elemental mercury.
  • Reduced liability and environmental risk.
  • Lower operational costs through on-site processing.
  • Enhanced sustainability and corporate responsibility.

Greatest benefits of the MMCU technology

  • On-Site Mercury Stabilization: The MMCU allows companies to perform mercury stabilization directly at the waste generation site, eliminating the need for costly and risky transportation of elemental mercury.
  • Full Control and Traceability: The waste-owning company maintains complete control and traceability over the entire stabilization process, ensuring compliance with environmental and corporate responsibility standards.
  • Eco-Friendly and Safe Disposal: By converting elemental mercury to a non-leachable, stable form (HgS), the MMCU significantly reduces the environmental impact and risks associated with mercury disposal.
  • Compliance with International Regulations: The MMCU is designed to meet the strictest international environmental regulations, including the requirements of the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
  • Cost-Effective and Flexible Solution: The mobile design of the MMCU minimizes operational costs by eliminating transportation expenses and enabling flexible deployment to multiple sites

Flowsheet

How MMCU works:

The unit operates according to the mercury sulphide formation reaction. Elemental mercury is mixed with solid sulphur in a stoichiometric ratio to form HgS. This reaction takes place in a liquid phase and under an inert atmosphere, avoiding material oxidation and potential hazards. The continuous and intensive mixing during the process ensures a complete reaction to form or obtain mercury sulphide (red cinnabar), which allows for its safe and final disposal. HgS is a stable non-toxic compound that is ready to be disposed in salt mines or specialized disposal sites. Optionally a HgS briquetting system is available for additional mechanical stability.
