In-process management of hazardous waste cuts costs/risks

Traditionally, management of industrial waste is a four-stage process: (1) storage at source; (2) evaluation of waste disposal options; (3) collection and transportation; and (4) treatment and disposal or recycling.

PyroPlas is the best commercially available waste disintegration system that utilises argon plasma arc technology. Increasing financial pressure, scrutiny of environmental impact, heightened restrictions on cross-border waste transportation, and rising focus on the environmental risks of transporting waste mean that the time is ripe for businesses to (a) reduce their risky reliance on external suppliers of waste disposal services and (b) boost efficiency, by transitioning to self-sufficiency through in-process waste management.

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only changed where we work but how we work. The current restrictions on trade and transportation due to the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the risks and impact associated with reliance upon an extensive waste management chain.

In-process waste management can apply to most industries. As a prime example, processors or manufacturers of halogenated compounds (of chlorine, bromine and fluorine – used in refrigerants, pesticides and many other industrial applications) can manage hazardous waste or by-products much more safely and efficiently by using specialised technologies at source.

Traditional problems: budget blows out, big risks boomerang

There are risks at every stage of the traditional waste management process, including exposure of workers to hazardous materials, and accidents leading to spills or releases that impact the wider population and harm the environment.

Obviously, transporting hazardous waste – whether by pipe or forklift across the production site, by truck around the city or country, or by ship internationally – increases these risks manifold and is complicated by various regulatory requirements.

In the current global pandemic, with travelling across international and internal borders is still not as easy as before, waste export has stalled and will remain so for some time. Manufacturers who do not implement in-process waste management may be forced to cease production to avoid exceeding their waste storage capacity, if for no other reason.

Even before COVID-19, regulations around waste disposal were tightening globally, with consequences for non-compliance increasing in severity. Across jurisdictions, if the hazardous waste producer contracts another party to fulfil any stage of the process, ultimate liability still rests with the producer.

Critically, ‘in-process’ waste management enables manufacturers to retain control of, and mitigate, their legal and financial risks.
