Clean, Simple and Transparent Destruction of ODS and SGG

Gaseous waste streams
Salty water
Recovered halogens

Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) and Synthetic Greenhouse Gases (SGG) are specialty gases used in a range of industrial applications because of their optimal thermodynamic properties and insulative dielectric properties. Due to their significant chlorine and fluorine content, these substances have significant Ozone Depleting Potential (ODP) and Global Warming Potential (GWP). Their high value and serious environmental impact mean that many organisations recover these gases as far as possible although there are still considerable volumes that need to be destroyed. Destruction of substances like refrigerants is complex due to their predisposition to produce toxic by-products. These by-products often still have serious ODP and GWP should poor destruction practices be applied (i.e. incomplete combustion).

econ industries’ PyroPlas utilises argon plasma arc technology, a technology approved by the Montreal Protocol to destroy refrigerants. At econ industries, we offer the expertise and the technology to easily, consistently and transparently destroy ODS and SGG.

Benefits of PyroPlas destruction for ODS and SGG:

  • Turn-key, skid-mounted plant delivery including commissioning, training and optimisation support
  • Small footprint
  • Transparent operation for easy auditing since no dilution or mixing of feed is required
  • Strong experience of various refrigerants and SGGs to adequately respond to client needs
  • Worldwide EPA acceptance
  • Automated easy operation
  • Pyrolysis process – not combustion or incineration
  • Excellent DRE in line with Montreal Protocol and local environmental requirements
Key Facts

PyroPlas Argon Plasma Arc Destruction Pyrolysis
Proven technology with several plants operating around the world

Input material:

Destruction of refrigerants – CFCs HCFCs, HFCs, PFCs, Halons (R22, R23, R11, R134a etc.)

Inert Brine Solution

Continuous operation with remote monitoring minimises operator attendance

Destruction Removal Efficiency (DRE):

One month’s PyroPlas operation on R134a would avoid 49,000 tonnes of CO2 from being emitted to the atmosphere. This is approximately the amount of CO2 that can be sequestered by 58,000 acres of forests (corresponds to an area of 81,232 soccer fields) over a year.

If this calculation is applied to R23, a month’s PyroPlas operation would avoid approximately 500,000 tonnes of CO2 from being emitted to the atmosphere, approximately the amount of CO2 that can be sequestered by 600,000 acres of forests (corresponds to an area of 840,336 soccer fields) over one year!
